In Defense of the Green Loan Program

It’s been a bad week of press for Peter Garrett, and the Government has come under considerable fire regarding the Green Loan Scheme. The below speech made by Senator Milne gives a perfect account of the problems it’s encountered as a result of its mismanagement.

However it’s important not to put the Green Loans Program into the same basket as the Insulation fiasco.  The Green Loans Program is actually a fantastic education and awareness program, which gives householders access to a clear, colourful, and comprehensive report on how their home currently rates, and supplying a list of action points they can then follow if they choose.

The added feature of how with each recommended action, it quantifies how much it would save them on their energy bill if they were to implement, is often commented as being highly useful information.

The criticism of the program is mostly due to the Governments mismanagement towards the Assessors, and will leave many jobless when the scheme expires 1.5yrs prematurely.

A flaw affecting householders though is that the recommendation reports are supposed to be posted by the Government to householders – and there are delays of many months at present.  Ecovise has over-come this by emailing householders reports within a couple of weeks of visiting them, and has received excellent feedback about the value of the report.

With energy prices soaring, and Mandatory Disclosure where a property is for sale or leased proposed to be introduced in NSW in May 2011 (as is already done in ACT & QLD), it is of growing interest to householders to know exactly what it is they can do to reduce their power bills, and improve the thermal dynamics of their home.

A free Home Sustainability Assessment through the Green Loans Program, is an opportunity that people would be sensible to jump on.
